Install OneTapOK on Android

Download the app free from our itch.io page. No itch.io or Google Play account is needed. If you are setting up a loved one's phone, follow these steps together.

Android 8.0 or newer · Internet needed to send · v0.1.0

Open the download on itch.io

1. Download and install

  1. On the phone that will use the app, open our itch.io page. Tap Download next to OneTapOK-Android-0.1.0.apk. This is the app itself; do not unzip it.
  2. Wait for the download to finish. If your browser asks to keep the APK, confirm you are on vvlabs.itch.io/onetapok before accepting the download.
  3. Tap the downloaded file. You can also find it in your browser menu → Downloads, or the Files app → Downloads.
  4. If Android says installation from this source is not allowed, tap Settings and enable Allow from this source for the browser or Files app opening the APK. Go back and open the file again. You may find this under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps. Menu names vary by phone.
  5. Tap Install, wait, then Open. If Google Play Protect offers to scan the new app, allow the scan. If it identifies the app as harmful or blocks it, stop and contact us; do not turn off Play Protect.
  6. After installing, you can turn off Allow from this source for your browser/Files app. OneTapOK will keep working. Android may ask for this permission again when you install an update.

2. Set up together

  1. Open OneTapOK and follow the screens. Choose a language and enter the name of the person checking in each day.
  2. Choose a daily check-in deadline, the grace period after it, and a reminder sound. Pick a time that suits the person's routine.
  3. Add at least one trusted contact with their consent: name and correct email address. You can add up to three. Contacts do not need the app; alerts arrive by email, not SMS or a phone call.
  4. Allow notifications when Android asks. During the reliability step, use the buttons for unrestricted battery use and exact reminders/alarms where offered. These help reminders arrive on time and do not give access to photos, contacts, or location.
  5. Finish setup while connected to the internet and wait for confirmation it was saved. Ask the contact to check their inbox and Spam for the welcome email. If the app reports an email error, check the address and retry from settings.
  6. Optional: add the large home screen button. Hold an empty space on the home screen → Widgets → OneTapOK → add the widget. Some phones require opening the app once first.

3. Use it each day

  1. Tap the green OK button once a day and wait for confirmation it was sent. If the app says it is waiting for internet, the server has not received it yet; enable Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  2. If there is no check-in by the deadline plus grace period, the system emails your trusted contacts. This is not immediate: checks run periodically and delivery also depends on the email provider.
  3. After checking in, the button turns red. Hold it for 5 seconds to ask your contacts to get in touch. Without internet, the request waits and no alert has been sent. Call 112 in an immediate emergency.

4. Update and keep your settings

  1. Future versions will be free on this same itch.io page. Google Play does not automatically update this APK; visit the page when a new version is available.
  2. Download the new APK and open it over the installed app. Tap Update / Install. Do not uninstall the app or clear its data: this keeps its identity and settings. Open it after updating and check reminders.
  3. An existing debug/test build or a build from another source may have a different signature, so Android can refuse the update. Do not delete it without help: this can lose local settings and leave an old server registration. Contact us to move to the official version.

5. If something goes wrong

  1. File will not open / Problem parsing package: check Settings → About phone → Android version (8.0+ required). Download the APK again and make sure the download finishes.
  2. App not installed: free up storage, restart the phone, and check for an older test build. If you already set up contacts, contact us before uninstalling or clearing app data.
  3. Installation blocked by work policy, parental controls, or enhanced protection: do not bypass the restriction. Ask the person managing the phone for help. Direct APK installation may not be allowed on that phone.
  4. No reminder: check OneTapOK notifications, volume, Do Not Disturb, exact alarms, and battery restrictions. Some manufacturers add automatic-start or sleeping-app settings. Open the app after a restart; avoid Force stop.
  5. Contact receives no email: check the address, Spam, the phone's internet connection, and the app's save/send confirmation. Email may be delayed. If it persists, contact us with the Android version, phone model, and exact error text. Do not send passwords or your contacts' personal details.

OneTapOK helps you stay in touch with loved ones. It is not medical monitoring or an emergency service, does not guarantee immediate alert delivery, and does not replace 112. Call 112 in an emergency.
